Gary Rowett's recently relegated Stoke are also looking to build on a weekend 2-2 draw, having earned a point at Preston North End on Saturday evening thanks to a Peter Crouch equaliser.

EARLY TEAM NEWS

STOKE CITY

Reports suggest that Gary Rowett could turn to experienced forward Peter Crouch from the start on Wednesday night after the former England international scored his 200th goal in English football coming from the bench to equalise in the weekend's 2-2 draw at Preston North End.

The 37-year-old has previous with Latics in Stoke City colours, having scored in our most recent meeting, a 2-2 draw in January 2013 and in that season's other fixture, a 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium in September 2012.

In terms of injury and fitness, Sam Clucas continues to recover from knee surgery he had in the spring, whilst summer signing Cuco Martina stepped up his transition with 45 minutes for the Potters' Under 23s against Southampton on Monday evening.

WIGAN ATHLETIC

Latics saw timely returns to fitness for Gavin Massey and Nathan Byrne on Saturday, with winger Massey starting in the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest before being replaced by Byrne in the second half. The double Player of the Year from 2017-18 had been absent since the club's summer trip to Spain.

Darron Gibson continues to miss out due to a groin injury, with the midfielder expected to return in the next couple of weeks, whilst defender Dan Burn is only likely to be back in contention after the international fixture period at the start of September.

Joe Garner is yet to feature in a match day squad but continues to step up his fitness.
