Wigan Athletic can confirm the signing of Ivorian defender Cedric Kipre from Motherwell for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance.

Kipre, 21, has signed a three-year deal at the DW Stadium and will join Latics’ squad for Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship opener against Sheffield Wednesday.

The Paris-born defender played youth football with Leicester City before moving to Motherwell last summer, where he played 49 times in all competitions, helping Stephen Robinson’s side to both the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup finals.

Speaking about Kipre’s move to the DW Stadium, Latics manager Paul Cook said:

“Cedric is a strong, powerful and athletic defender, who we have been monitoring some time.

“He is at a great age to develop his game after a really good season with Motherwell and I am looking forward to working with him.”
