Latics' Development Squad ended 2018 with a hard-fought draw away at Huddersfield Town on Tuesday afternoon, with Joe Gelhardt and Divin Baningime on target to pull their side from behind on two separate occasions.

With mixed results in the Central League, Latics have stepped their game up against higher opposition so far this season, earning victories against the likes of Derby County and Burnley, with Tuesday's draw at Huddersfield's Canalside training ground another encouraging result.

Latics were made to fight, beating off the wind and rain in West Yorkshire and working their way back from a goal down twice throughout the 90 minutes, although in truth their second half display should have provided a victory.

The hosts took the lead just 15 minutes into the game when Owen Evans' saved Scott High's free kick, only for the Huddersfield captain to find Aaron Rowe with a reverse pass in the second phase of play, allowing Rowe to slide his effort past the former Wales Under 21 goalkeeper.

Huddersfield's lead lasted little over two minutes when good pressure from Joe Piggott, Gelhardt, and the returning Victor Maffeo saw the latter win the ball back high in the final third. Maffeo released the ball to Piggott for an exchange with Alex Perry, who slipped the ball through for Gelhardt, his shot far too powerful for the hosts' goalkeeper.

By the half an hour mark another free kick caused Latics problems, this time the delivery was floated into a melee of bodies in area, allowing Rarmani Edmonds-Green to head home for 2-1.

Latics dominated the second half, but it took them until 10 minutes from time to equalise despite constant pressure.

Midfielder Perry and substitute forward James Berry linked up, with the latter feeding fellow sub Baningime on the left hand side for a smart finish across the keeper with his right foot.

Latics could have snatched a 3-2 win late on, but striker Piggott was denied from the penalty spot by Ryan Schofield.
