The latest fitness and injury news ahead of Latics' clash with Derby County in the Sky Bet Championship.

  • Team News: Wigan Athletic v Derby County.
  • Gavin Massey closing in on return over Christmas period.
  • Nick Powell set for spell on the sidelines over Christmas.

Speaking to iFollow Latics at the Wigan Athletic Training Centre on Friday morning, Paul Cook provided updates on Nick Powell, Gavin Massey and Michael Jacobs ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet Championship clash with Derby County at the DW Stadium.

On Powell, Cook began:

"Nick won't play over the Christmas period and he'll be out for a period of time. It's his hamstring and it's something we have managed over the last 18 months because of historical injuries he's had.

"I want to assure fans that we would never ask a player to play through injury, every player is put through medical tests to make sure they're fit. Nick will be given some time to recover and we'll make sure everything continues to be managed in the correct way."

With Powell ruled out, Cook brought about some good news from winger Massey, explaining:

"Gavin Massey has rejoined the main training group and he's due to get some minutes with the Development Squad next week, with the view to him being available for the 18-man squad for Ipswich.

"We haven't rushed Gavin, he's simply ahead of schedule. It's the measure of the man and player he is, because he's worked incredibly hard to get to this point."

Michael Jacobs (hamstring) remains sidelined, but is making good progress:

"Michael Jacobs is a bit further back than Gavin, but he's getting there. He's raring to get back, but he has to remain patient and make sure he doesn't rush it."

Antonee Robinson (ankle) remains out, but Chey Dunkley (knee) is pushing for a pre-Christmas return.

Rams captain Curtis Davies is out for the season, Jack Marriott could be in line for a return, whilst George Evans is set to feature in Derby's Under 23 fixture against Manchester City on Friday evening as part of his recovery from injury.

Joe Ledley has resumed training after a hip complaint, but Mason Bennett, Marcus Olsson and Craig Forsyth could still be struggling to return.
