Latics were handed a fitness boost for forward Gavin Massey on Tuesday afternoon when he featured for 45 minutes in the Development Squad's 3-1 defeat away at Sheffield United.
The 26-year-old who has one goal in his four appearances in the Sky Bet Championship so far this season and starred in Latics' 3-0 win at Stoke City earlier in the season, has been out with a freak hamstring injury since the first team's 1-0 defeat away at QPR at the end of August.
In his pre-Derby County press conference Latics boss Paul Cook broke the news of Massey's involvement in the Development Squad fixture and was hopeful that the former Leyton Orient man would be available to travel to Latics' clash with Ipswich Town this coming Saturday.
Leo Da Silva Lopes scored Latics' goal in the defeat, with Massey and co. unlucky not to convert chances into goals after a positive first half.
Latics were eventually undone by the Blades, but the overarching positive is a big boost for Paul Cook and his squad, with one of the season's early stand-out players on the mend.
Latics' starting XI at Sheffield United was: Lavercombe, Golden, Galvin, Williams, Bruce, MacDonald, Massey, Perry, Burgess, Lopes, Piggott
