JUNIOR DISABLED SUPPORTERS ROOM OPEN ON HOME MATCH DAYS AT THE DW STADIUM DURING 2018/19 SEASON

6 December 2018

The Blue Room was made possible thanks to a grant of £18,350 from the Premier League Fans Fund.

  • Blue Room open at home weekend league games during 2018/19.
  • Facility located underneath the East Stand in the club's Family Zone.
  • Premier League Fans Fund gave Latics funding of £18,350 for the room.

The Blue Room – a pre-match area at the DW Stadium for the club’s junior disabled supporters  – is open for every home league weekend fixture at the DW Stadium during the 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship season.

Lisa Nandy, MP for Wigan, presented a cheque of £18,350 from the Premier League Fans Fund to Wigan Athletic Community Trust at #LaticsOpenDay in July to enable the club’s charity to create an area in its Family Zone for junior disabled fans to enjoy fun activities before each home game.

Situated underneath the East Stand of the DW Stadium, the Blue Room opens from 1.30pm and boasts a variety of different games.

First team star Gavin Massey visited the facility befoe the recent fixture against Reading and said: "It was amazing to visit the Blue Room to see the work that has been done by the club and the Community Trust. The children were really happy and it was a real pleasure to meet them and their families.”

The Premier League Fans Fund is a commitment from the Premier League to fund projects which improve the relationship between fans and their clubs, the way supporters engage with each other and their experience of the game.

Joe Pym, Disability Football Officer at the Community Trust, said: “The Blue Room will enable our junior disabled fans to enjoy a brilliant match day experience, with the facility a safe and inclusive environment for them to be able to have lots of fun and make new friends at Latics fixtures."

The funding will also provide Latics with an opportunity to organise activities at schools and community groups across the Wigan Borough as part of its Every Player Counts disability sports programme.

Becky Adams, Community Trust coach, said: "The facility will give our young disabled fans more confidence and independence, and it's a really positive step from the club to introduce this."
