A second-half strike from Freddie Sears was the difference between the two sides as Latics fell to a defeat in difficult conditions at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon.

Latics felt they may have been awarded a second-half penalty when Gary Roberts was fouled but instead a free-kick was given right on the edge of the area by referee Scott Duncan.

Late chances fell to Callum Connolly and Reece James, the latter from a free-kick after he’d already hit the bar, but Paul Cook’s side couldn’t find an equaliser.

Cook had made two changes from the side that lost to Derby County last weekend with the suspended Kal Naismith missing out and James Vaughan dropping to the bench as Connolly and Will Grigg returned.

After an early period of defending, Latics got on the front and crated the better first-half chances as Josh Windass raced in behind from a James pass but scuffed his shot off target.

James was again the provider on the half hour mark as a fizzed pass across the area was crying out for a decisive touch but neither Windass or Grigg could make it.

At the other end, Sears got in behind Latics’ defence on the right of the penalty area but he blazed over.

Before half time, Dean Gerken spilled a James corner and Connolly saw his reaction shot blocked at close range.

After the break, Latics continued their control and James’ fizzing effort from the right looked destined for the back of the net but crashed back off the Ipswich crossbar.

Latics were made to pay for not getting the opener soon after as Sears’ shot from the edge of the area beat Walton.

Connolly headed over a McManaman cross late on and James saw a free-kick tipped wide by Gerken but Cook’s side couldn’t find a leveller.
