Wigan Athletic fell to defeat against Derby County in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday afternoon as Jack Marriott scored the game’s only goal in the first-half, shortly after Latics had been reduced to ten men as Kal Naismith was sent off after just 14 minutes for a last man foul.
Latics were spirited in their response and went close to grabbing an equaliser in the second-half but it wasn’t to be as Frank Lampard’s side climbed to 3rd in the table, whilst Paul Cook’s men dropped to 16th.
Cook made one change from the side which drew at Bolton Wanderers last weekend as James Vaughan started in place of Will Grigg.
Latics started brightly and created good openings from the off; first Nathan Byrne broke down the left and crossed towards Vaughan, who was just beaten to the ball by former Latics stopper Scott Carson.
Cook’s side’s best chance of the first half fell to Vaughan as brilliant build – again on the left – this time freed Gary Roberts, who crossed for the striker, but he couldn’t make a clean connection to beat Carson at close range.
The game turned on the quarter hour mark as Harry Wilson got in behind Latics’ defence and was judged to have been held back by Naismith, who was then dismissed by referee Gavin Ward for a last man foul.
Marriott then got the game’s only goal five minutes later as he headed in from Jayden Bogle’s cross.
Even in the immediacy to the Derby opener, Latics showed a response with Roberts’ deep free kick being fired back across goal by Cedric Kipre.
However, Nathan Byrne’s goal-line clearance from a Wilson shot kept Latics in the game soon after before a double change from Cook, which saw Vaughan and Roberts replaced by Darron Gibson and Callum Connolly.
Mason Mount was denied by a solid Christian Walton save and Reece James tested Carson from a free-kick before the break as the game went in at half-time 1-0.
Latics started the second-half brightly and Walton’s direct free-kick was flicked on by Dan Burn for Samy Morsy to almost divert home but he couldn’t quite get the decisive touch.
Arguably the best chance of the second-half fell to James, who went through one on one with Carson after Windass played Morsy’s pass into his path, but the Chelsea loanee couldn’t quite apply the finish.
Lee Evans drove wide from range and Latics finished strongly but couldn’t quite force a leveller.
