Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook says Latics did enough to win their local derby with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon but equally acknowledged his side were ran hard by Phil Parkinson’s side on a tense afternoon.

Will Grigg’s penalty cancelled out Will Buckley’s opener for the hosts and Latics couldn’t make second-half chances pay as they searched for a second derby win of the week.

Reflecting post-match with iFollow Latics, Cook said:

“I felt we did enough to win the game; we had really good situations and had clear-cut chances.

“It was nice for us to come away and pick up a point, we have stopped a little rut away from home and small steps in this division are huge. We have had a week where we have taken five points, we are unbeaten in three and confidence needs to be built like that.

“It is such an unforgiving league; we have been away from home and been level at 88 or 89 minutes and not come away with a point. We have spoken about making sure that, when we are in these places, a point is the least we take and I am pleased with the lads for that today.

“Our supporters were terrific today and they got right behind the team.”

And, as the Christmas period approaches, Cook was pleased to have Grigg back in the starting XI ahead of some exciting fixtures.

“We are getting a bit of a squad back now,” he added. “Griggy is back to full fitness, Vaughany was outstanding on Wednesday night and it is important we try our best to get team selection right and get the squad right behind it.

“If we cut out individual errors, like we have in the last few games, then we will continue to pick up points.

“We have some great games coming up, they come thick and fast in this league and we have earned the right to go and have a really good game with Derby next week.”
