Take a look at Latics' transfer business during January 2018, as Paul Cook added four players to his squad during the battle for promotion from Sky Bet League One to the Sky Bet Championship.

Wednesday 3 January - Owen Evans joins Sutton United on loan

Wales youth international goalkeeper Owen Evans joined National League promotion chasers Sutton United, linking up with his Latics team mate Terell Thomas, who arrived at the Yellows six days earlier.

The 21-year-old has previously experienced loan spells with Witton Albion, Rhyl and North Ferriby.

Friday 5 January - Sam Stubbs joins AFC Fylde on loan

Following in the footsteps of Evans, 19-year-old defender Sam Stubbs also joined a National League promotion chasing team in AFC Fylde, linking up with his Latics team mate Luke Burke who has been on loan at Mill Farm since the start of the season.

Stubbs played eight times for Crewe Alexandra in Sky Bet League Two earlier in the season ahead of his move to the Latics' Emirates FA Cup first round opponents the Coasters.

Monday 8 January - Jamie Walker signs from Hearts

Jamie Walker joins Wigan Athletic

Comfortable on the left, right or behind the striker, 24-year-old Scotsman Jamie Walker was the first addition to Paul Cook's squad in January.

With over 150 appearances in the Scottish Championship and Premiership with his home-city club Hearts, Walker arrived with a minor injury following a collision in the Edinburgh Derby against Hibernian in the final game of 2017.

Wednesday 10 January - Lee Evans and Ivan Toney recalled

Latics lost 51 appearances and nine goals combined when midfielder Lee Evans and striker Ivan Toney were recalled by Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United respectively.

Wales international Evans scored three times in 23 games for Latics, including in wins against Bury, Middlesbrough and Crawley Town, before Wolves recalled him to join Championship side Sheffield United. His final appearance came in Latics' 1-0 victory away at Northampton Town.

Toney, who scored six times in 28 appearances, was also recalled to join another club, linking back up with his former loan club Scunthorpe United.

Friday 12 January - James Vaughan joins from Sunderland

Paul Cook added to his fire power ahead of Latics' clash with Peterborough United at the DW Stadium, drafting in League One's 2016-17 second top goal scorer James Vaughan from Championship club Sunderland.

Vaughan, who netted 24 goals in 36 starts for Bury last season, was registered in time to make his debut from the bench against the Posh.

Monday 15 January - Jack Byrne joins Oldham Athletic

After his seven goals in 25 games on loan at Boundary Park, 21-year-old midfielder Jack Byrne joined Oldham Athletic on a permanent basis.

The former Republic of Ireland youth international featured twice for Latics following his arrival from Manchester City in January 2017.

Thursday 18 January - James Barrigan and Josh Gregory leave Latics

Young professionals James Barrigan and Josh Gregory left Latics by mutual consent.

Barrigan, 19, made three first team appearances after progressing through the academy and, like Gregory, was part of Latics' side which reached the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup in 2016 before losing Man City in extra time at the DW Stadium.

Thursday 25 January - Jay Fulton joins on loan from Swansea City

Jay Fulton joins Wigan Athletic

Paul Cook bolstered his midfielder options with 23-year-old former Scotland youth international Jay Fulton.

The Swansea City man came through the ranks at Falkirk before his move to Wales, and has gathered EFL experience on loan at Oldham.

Fulton will wear the number 28 shirt for Latics and had his first taste of a DW Stadium match day as an unused substitute in the 2-0 victory over West Ham United in the Emirates FA Cup.

Tuesday 30 January - Luke Burke and Sam Stubbs extend loans at AFC Fylde

Latics' young defensive duo impressed at Mill Farm, enough so that manager Dave Challinor snapped them up until the end of the season after his Fylde side began to close the gap on the National League play-off places.

Wednesday 31 January - Terell Thomas and Owen Evans extend loans at Sutton United

Two more of Latics' young stars impressed in the National League, helping promotion chasers Sutton to close the gap at the top end, as well as progression in the FA Trophy, prompting manager Paul Doswell to keep defender Thomas until the end of the season and goalkeeper Evans until the end of February.

Wednesday 31 January - Shaun MacDonald signs contract extension

Wales international midfielder Shaun MacDonald extended his stay at Latics until the summer of 2019, a welcome piece of news for manager Paul Cook who said:

“It has been a difficult year for Shaun but his positivity makes him such a popular lad about the place and we are looking forward to getting him back in full training.”

Wednesday 31 January - Jordan Flores officially returns from Chesterfield

Jordan Flores was formally recalled from his loan at Chesterfield to continue his recover at the Wigan Athletic Training Centre.

Flores, 22, has been rehabilitating back with Latics since his road traffic accident in October.

He played 15 times for the Spireites in 2017.

Wednesday 31 January - Devante Cole joins from Fleetwood Town

12-goal Devante Cole was added to Paul Cook's attack. The former Manchester City youngster joined from fellow League One side Fleetwood Town on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

After signing on transfer deadline day, Cole said:

“It’s a big club as it is and I want to get them back to where they should be. It’s the perfect club for me to come to.

“The facilities here are Premier League standard and the club have obviously been there before and that’s where it wants to get back to.”

Wednesday 31 January - Donervon Daniels recalled from Rochdale

Latics recalled Donervon Daniels from his loan spell with fellow Sky Bet League One side Rochdale.

Daniels, 24, featured 18 times for Keith Hill’s Dale in the first-half of the 2017-18 season, after missing the majority of the previous campaign due to injury.

The defender, who helped Latics to win the League One title in 2015-16, is available for Saturday’s clash with Gillingham at the DW Stadium.
