LATICS TO SUPPORT THIRD WIGAN PRIDE CELEBRATION

28 February 2018

This year's Wigan Pride will highlight equality and diversity and encourage everyone to get involved in their local communities.

  • This year's event will highlight equality and diversity.
  • Celebration to take place in Wigan Town Centre on 11th August 2018.
  • Jonathan Jackson, Chief Executive - "We're delighted to support Wigan Pride."

Wigan Athletic will be showing their support for Wigan Pride by sponsoring the event for the third consecutive year when it takes place on 11th August 2018.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the event which will highlight equality and diversity, while encouraging everyone to get involved in their local communities.

The announcement follows the club dedicating their game against Rochdale at the DW Stadium to Football v Homophobia, with the squad warming up in t-shirts in support of the campaign.

Representatives from the Wigan Pride Committee attended the Football v Homophobia fixture, where first team player Shaun MacDonald presented the group with a Latics shirt signed by Sir Ian McKellan from last year’s event, of which he was a special guest.

Jonathan Jackson, Wigan Athletic Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to show our support for Wigan Pride for the third consecutive year and are proud to be part of the celebration. We’re committed to promoting equality and diversity, and look forward to the event being another huge success this year.”

Daniel Bonney, Wigan Pride Committee Member, said: “We are once again hugely thankful to Latics for their support of this year’s event. The club are a huge part of the community and have a large fan base so it’s fantastic to have such an organisation involved in our celebration.

He added: “We were honoured to be invited to their dedicated Football v Homophobia game and it was encouraging to see first-hand how the club are taking an active part in tackling discrimination in football and sport and making it a welcoming place for everyone.”
