- Gnanduillet and Mellor netted in the first half for the visitors.
- Latics next in action against Manchester City next Monday evening.
Two first half Blackpool goals condemned Wigan Athletic to only their second home defeat of the season at the DW Stadium this evening.
Armand Gnanduillet broke the deadlock early on for the visitors as his scuffed shot crept past Brighton loanee Christian Walton in the Latics goal.
The advantage was extended before the interval when Kelvin Mellor reacted first to defensive hesitancy inside the six-yard box to fire home.
After Saturday’s reverse at Southend United, Paul Cook made one change to his side by bringing in Reece James for Callum Elder at left back.
The Tangerines found the net inside the first three minutes as Gnanduillet’s scuffed effort inside the area beat Walton and went in off the post.
In response, Chey Dunkley, who was making his 100th EFL career start, headed wide from a corner and Michael Jacobs tested Joe Lumley with a low strike from the edge of the area.
Nick Powell later sent a free kick just wide from a good position, while at the other end Gnanduillet missed a chance to extend the advantage, firing well wide instead.
The lead was doubled eight minutes before the break when Mellor capitalised on defensive hesitancy to stab the ball home inside the six-yard box.
Latics started the second half strongly and went close to reducing the arrears through Dan Burn who headed Max Power’s free kick from the right over Lumley’s bar.
Pressure continued to mount on the visiting goal as Will Grigg saw an effort blocked well and Dunkley headed wide of the far post from a corner.
Powell was inches away from scoring on 65 minutes when he fizzed an effort narrowly wide from a tight angle, while substitute James Vaughan headed over soon after.
Mellor could have added to his tally 10 minutes from time but he was denied by a fine save from Walton who tipped his header over the bar.
The visitors defended resolutely and prevented Latics from finding a way through during the final stages as they left with all three points.
