Sir Tom Finney Ladies FC 1-2 Wigan Athletic Ladies Development Squad
Clinical finishes from substitutes Ellie Cleary and Charlotte Evans secured Wigan Athletic Ladies' Development Squad’s passage into the final of the Lancashire County Cup on Sunday as they beat Sir Tom Finney Ladies FC.
Eve Walker had put the hosts ahead at UCLan Sports Arena after 59 minutes when the visiting defence failed to clear a long ball and the lead could have been extended shortly after when Walker hit the post.
Latics levelled 20 minutes from time when Cleary’s shot was well saved by Sarah Harrison only for the attacker to react first to the loose ball and smash home.
The turnaround was complete when Evans was slid in superbly by Karen Graham and delightfully chipped the ball over Harrison and into the net.
Latics stayed strong during the final moments and were disciplined in their play with midfield trio Alex Cullen, Flossie Jones and Faye Byrne building a resolute base in front of the defence.
After the game, manager Danny Mather said: “I’m delighted for the players and they deserve all the praise. I asked them to play as I knew they could and they gave me everything. There were some really good performances and two genuine moments of quality won us the game.
He added: “We’ve got a number of new young players this season and it’s been encouraging to see how they’ve integrated into the team and how everyone is fighting for each other.”
