Latics remain top of the EFL Youth Alliance despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Port Vale on Saturday afternoon.

Will McGuffie's goal saw Latics come from behind to earn a point, but Nick Chadwick's side were always the team with the initiative likely to take the three points, only to be frustrated by a Vale side that sat deep to prevent the host's free scoring forwards.

Harry Benns gave the Valiants the lead when he picked up on a loose ball from a cross from the right side, bouncing his finish into the ground to beat Jordan Perrin in Latics' goal.

It took until the closing eight minutes for Latics to equalise, McGuffie meeting Joe Downey's corner to rescue a point.

Jensen Weir and Charlie Jolley combined late on to almost clinch a winning goal, but once again Latics were left frustrated.

Rochdale's 1-0 victory away at Walsall closed the gap at the top, with Latics six points clear of second place Dale who have three games in hand.

Latics: Perrin, Maffeo (Golden 73), B.Roberts, Plant, Long (McGuffie 80), Cotter, Culshaw (Weir 62), Downey, Jolley, Berry (Kyle 62), Baningime
