Latics were runaway winners with an incredible 9-0 victory over Morecambe on Saturday, as Nick Chadwick's impressive side strengthened their position as EFL Youth Alliance leaders.
Mwiya Malumo and Charlie Jolley both grabbed braces at Christopher Park, with James Berry, Will McGuffie, Adam Long, Tylor Golden and Mitchell Culshaw sweeping up the rest of the goals.
Latics were ahead inside the opening three minutes when Victor Maffeo forced a poor pass in the Morecambe defence, allowing Berry to pick his way into the box for a simple one-v-one finish.
Two minutes later McGuffie doubled the early lead. Goalkeeper Jordan Perrin found Brad Roberts who charged forward to find Malumo down the left side, his cut back to Roberts in the area was diverted to Berry who teed McGuffie up for a fine finish from the edge of the area.
Goals three and four came in quick succession to put Latics 4-0 up inside 20 minutes, first through Long's effort, bundled home from a Joe Downey corner, and then a fine one-v-one finish by Malumo who latched onto McGuffie's pass after pressure from Morecambe's kick off.
Striker Malumo added his second shortly before half time. Maffeo applied the pressure, as he did for the opener, allowing Downey to pick up a loose ball to feed Berry down the right side, and from there it was a simple cut back for Malumo to turn hom. 5-0 to Latics.
Maffeo, who played his part in two of the first five goals, almost got one for himself when Berry played him in behind from Long's high pass, but the Spanish defender's effort was denied, only for Golden to head home the rebound.
Substitutes combined for the seventh goal as Jamie Cotter won the ball in midfield and via Berry, fellow sub Culshaw struck across goal from the right edge for a fine finish.
Leading goal scorer Jolley arrived off the bench for the final 12 minutes, and just four minutes into his cameo appearance the forward rounded the goalkeeper from Golden's clever pass to finish right footed.
Jolley's second and Latics' ninth came three minutes from time, when Neil Monaghan linked up with Culshaw and Golden down the right, the latter producing a fine cross for his striker Jolley to head home.
Latics: Perrin, Golden, Plant (Cotter 68), Long, B.Roberts, McGuffie, Downey (Monaghan 46), Maffeo (Culshaw 68), Berry, Malumo (Gelhardt 68), Baningime (Jolley 78)
