Young people in Wigan are benefiting from a brand-new sports facility at Winstanley Warriors Football Club which was opened by FA Cup winning captain Emmerson Boyce.
Emmerson, a Trustee of Wigan Athletic Community Trust, officially opened the £418,714 facility in November 2017, with the club’s award-winning charity running a range of programmes at the site which include Wigan Athletic Kicks and the Every Player Counts disability sports scheme.
The Community Trust run Kicks sessions to hundreds of youngsters in the borough each week, with activities including football, dance and multi-sport.
Tom Drake, Senior Community Development Coordinator at Wigan Athletic Community Trust, said: “The facilities at Winstanley Warriors are excellent and are a real driving force in attracting more participants to our Kicks project. We offer free football sessions on Friday evenings at 6-8pm and since delivering at the venue have seen a dramatic rise in new participants attending.
He added: “The project is designed to increase participation in sport and to divert young people away from anti-social behaviour. By engaging them in constructive activities, including a wide variety of sports, a number of communities in our borough have been transformed.”
Wigan Athletic Kicks uses the power of football and sports participation to inspire young people in some of the most high-need areas of the borough.
Shaun Rotherham, Chairman of Winstanley Warriors, said: “Grassroots football in the area has improved vastly since the opening of the facility, and we’ve been able to cater for so many young people in Wigan, some of which wouldn’t have had the opportunity to access football otherwise.”
