Accrington Girls and Ladies 3-2 Wigan Athletic Ladies.
Wigan Athletic Ladies returned to action on Sunday afternoon as they travelled to Accrington Girls and Ladies Football Club.
Strikers Ellie Threlkeld and Louise Ainscow were forced to miss out, which meant three of the club’s younger players were included in the squad, with Vicky Johnson making her debut at left back and Chelsea Bloor, a member of last season’s U16 and Development Cup winning team coming off the bench.
Latics started well and enjoyed most of the play during the first 15 minutes, with Emma Lysons and Rachel Ainscow attacking well down the flanks. Ainscow herself had a couple of good opportunities but she was denied. As the half wore on, Latics were indebted to goalkeeper Jess Linford who pulled off a couple of superb saves.
The home side took the lead on 20 minutes and could have extended the scoreline soon after, only to be denied by Linford. Accrington continued to pressure and scored a second just after the half hour mark before adding a third on half time despite the best efforts of Linford in goal.
Latics were much improved in the second half and came close to netting through Hornby who was a threat down the left. They were rewarded for their pressure however when Ashley Taylor reduced the arrears when she slid home.
More chances followed and Hornby deservedly got herself on the scoresheet with five minutes to go as she slotted calmly past the goalkeeper.
A hectic finale followed as Taylor and Lysons linked up superbly with the latter scoring only to be ruled out for offside and the home side held on.
