Speaking to iFollow Latics about Samy Morsy's return to Latics' squad for pre-season, manager Paul Cook said he couldn't be prouder of his captain after the 26-year-olds 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign with Egypt's national team.
"Samy's back in the building now and he'll be coming out to Spain with the rest of the group.
"The World Cup was a great experience for Samy and it was great for us as a club to have someone representing us out their with their national side.
"I think the fans enjoyed watch our former players and coaches out there in the World Cup, particularly the journey Roberto Martinez and Graeme Jones went on, but it's that little bit more special when one of your current players is involved.
"Samy had a big part to play in the Egyptian squad and we were delighted to see him play so early on in the tournament and give such a great account of himself.
"He's a very confident lad regardless of the status international football gives him. When you're travelling and you're getting minutes on the pitch in competitions like the World Cup I'm sure it will do wonders for self confidence, but Samy's a very focused lad on football anyway and I'm sure he'll be very driven at the start of the season to lead us on to what we hope will be a successful season."
