Young disabled Latics supporters are set to benefit from having their own pre-match space at the DW Stadium following the news that Wigan Athletic Community Trust have been awarded a grant of £18,350 from the Premier League Fans Fund.
MP for Wigan, Lisa Nandy, joined first team players Christian Walton and Max Power to present a cheque to club Chief Executive Jonathan Jackson and young people on the Community Trust's Every Player Counts disability sports programme at today's #LaticsOpenDay event at Robin Park Arena.
The grant will enable the Trust to work with Wigan Athletic to create a area in its existing Family Zone for disabled supporters and their families to enjoy fun pre-match activities before each home game.
The funding will also enable the club's official charity to organise activities at schools and community groups across Wigan to promote the new room, create a new junior disabled supporters club and also create a platform on the club’s website to allow first time visitors to have a virtual tour of the stadium before they come to a match.
The Premier League Fans Fund is a commitment from the Premier League to fund projects and organisations which improve the relationship between fans and their clubs, the way football supporters engage with each other and fans’ experience of the game.
Jonathan Jackson, Latics' Chief Executive and Trustee of the Community Trust, said: "Through our equality and diversity programme Together the football club has made a commitment to try and attract more young people with disabilities to come to home games at the DW Stadium.
“This grant from the Premier League Fans Fund will allow us to build on the great work that the Community Trust already does in SEN and mainstream schools across the town and encourage more of their participants to become part of the Latics family.”
