Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm that leading leisure and retail business DW Fitness First will become a principal club partner for the 2018-19 season as front of shirt sponsor.
The leading leisure and retail business’ brand will be prominent on the front of Latics’ new home and away PUMA shirts, which are set for a full release in mid-July.
DW was established in 2009, when Latics owner Dave Whelan bought 52 fitness clubs and attached retail stores from JJB Sports Plc, a company he had built up before selling in 2007. DW is a leading leisure and retail business which currently operates 90 retail stores around the UK stocking a wide range of authentic sports performance brands, as well as 76 leisure clubs providing extensive facilities for members including large gym floor and functional training areas, member cafes, swimming facilities and a wide range of group exercise classes.
In September 2016 DW Sports acquired Fitness First UK, increasing its portfolio further to include an additional 45 Fitness First clubs. ‘DW Fitness First’ is now the second largest operator of gyms in the UK providing expert training and top class facilities around the country.
Commenting on the partnership, Latics chief executive Jonathan Jackson said:
“DW Fitness First continue to grow as a business and, with the acquisition of the Fitness First stores two years ago, sit as one of the top operators of gyms and retail facilities in the UK.
“We look forward to a mutually beneficial partnership between the football club and DW Fitness First throughout the 2018-19 season.
“Our new kit, which has been hinted in a recent teaser video and throughout our recent marketing campaigns, takes us back to 1995 when Dave Whelan bought the football club. At that time, PUMA were the kit manufactures and JJB were our shirt sponsor… the start of a very special journey!”
Matt Sharpe, Director of DW Fitness First, added:
“We are delighted to continue the long-term partnership between the DW group and Wigan Athletic for the 2018-19 season.
“It’s an exciting time for DW Fitness First as we continue to grow and it is valuable for us to work with Wigan Athletic as they prepare for the exciting challenge of the Championship, which is one of the most-watched leagues in Europe.”
