Our countdown to #FixtureReleaseDay on Thursday 21 June continues, with our third instalment of Three of a Kind focusing on previous clashes with Blackburn Rovers.

Wigan Athletic 3 Blackburn Rovers 0 - Saturday 13 December 2008

Antonio Valencia goal v Blackburn Rovers 2008

As was so often the case during his time with Latics, Antonio Valencia stole the show in our winter 2008 clash with Rovers at the JJB Stadium, laying on goals for Emile Heskey and Lee Cattermole, with his own sumptuous low drive sandwiched in between, as Steve Bruce's men brushed aside Paul Ince's lowly Blackburn.

The comfortable 3-0 win was Latics' third in four matches and kicked off a run of four straight victories in a sequence that saw Bruce's side win seven of eight games to rocket up the Premier League table ahead of Christmas and into the New Year.

Valencia was at the heart of Latics' fine run and in particular this match, sending in a low cross for Heskey to cutely turn home, before thundering his own low effort beyond Paul Robinson two minutes after the opener.

Cattermole stepped up in the second half to give Latics a genuine sense of comfort when he turned home Valencia's cross, but in truth Latics always looked in control on an enjoyable afternoon at home.

James McCarthy celebration v Blackburn Rovers February 2011

Having failed to register a victory for over a month since a 2-1 win away at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Latics were desperate for three points, but probably not so much a seven-goal thriller which looked like it could have gone either way!

Luckily for Latics, Hugo Rodallega, Ben Watson and James McCarthy's double proved enough to earn a priceless triumph over Blackburn Rovers at the DW Stadium to lift Roberto Martinez's men out of the Premier League relegation zone.

It was a topsy-turvy affair kicked off by a Latics old boy in the form of Jason Roberts who pushed the visitors into an early lead, only for McCarthy to level before the break.

Rodallega put Latics ahead for the first time in the match five minutes after the break, before McCarthy grabbed his second in style, teeing the ball up with his first touch onto his thigh, before nestling it back down for a sweet volley for 3-1.

Moments later and Rovers put themselves back into the game through defender Christopher Samba, until a fourth goal of the game in a spell of 15 second half minutes made it 4-2 to Latics, Watson's penalty seemingly seeing off Steve Kean's stubborn outfit.

David Dunn's penalty nine minutes from time brought the nerves back to the encounter, but Ali Al Habsi and co. held firm at the back to ensure a vintage victory, and one that went a long way to Latics' Premier League survival in 2011.

Latics: Al Habsi, Gohouri, Alcaraz, Boyce, Figueroa, McCarthy (McArthur 83), Watson, N'Zogbia (Di Santo 89), Moses (Cleverley 67), Diame, Rodallega
Subs: Pollitt, S.Caldwell, Stam, Gomez

Blackburn Rovers: Robinson, Olsson, Samba, Nelsen, Salgado, Jones (N'Zonzi 79), Emerton (Dunn 61), Pedersen, Hoilett, Benjani (Diouf 60), Roberts
Subs: Bunn, Hanley, Grella, Andrews

Blackburn Rovers 0 Wigan Athletic 1 - Monday 7 May 2012

Antolin Alcaraz celebration v Blackburn Rovers 2012

Latics were on a roll having won five of their previous seven matches including wins against Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United, and fresh off the back of a 4-0 thrashing of Champions League chasing Newcastle United... not the visitors Blackburn Rovers wanted at Ewood Park knowing they needed a victory to escape relegation from the Premier League.

As expected for an all or nothing game things were cagey throughout, but in the dying embers with three minutes remaining, Latics defender Antolin Alcaraz rose above the Blackburn defence to power his header home, not only relegating Rovers, but also providing the final three points needed to secure Latics' status in the top flight for yet another season.

Blackburn Rovers: Robinson, Olsson, Givet (Petrovic 45), Bann, Orr (Goodwillie 80), Dunn (Olsson 44), Pedersen, Hoilett, Lowe, Modeste, Yakubu
Subs: Kean, Formica, N'Zonzi, Rochina

Latics: Al Habsi, Alcaraz, Caldwell, Boyce, Figueroa, McCarthy, Maloney, Moses, McArthur, Beausejour, Di Santo (Sammon 85)
Subs: Pollitt, Crusat, Watson, Gomez, Diame, Rodallega
