Wigan’s two major sporting institutions have teamed up to kick start the fight against excess weight and obesity.

Latics and Warriors have partnered as part of Wigan Council and Inspiring healthy lifestyles' ‘Lose Weight, Feel Great FOR MEN’ campaign to support weight loss through a selection of free 12 week fitness and nutrition programmes to be held at various locations across the borough.

FA Cup winning captain Emmerson Boyce and former Warriors player Kris Radlinski launched the programme at the DW Stadium this afternoon alongside Professor Kate Ardern, Director of Public Health for Wigan Council, by taking part in circuit training activities with over 25 participants on the West Stand concourse.

Emmerson, who is a Trustee of Wigan Athletic Community Trust, said: “This partnership between the two teams is huge for the town of Wigan because the link will inspire men to take part and lose weight and also motivate them to lead healthier lifestyles by working with their two favourite sports clubs.

“The overweight and obese rates in Wigan are higher than the North West and national average so this programme will aim to take steps to reduce those figures.”

Kris added: “The offer is the first of its kind in terms of two major sports clubs in the borough working alongside public sector partners to deliver a joint outcome, and hopefully this partnership can continue to develop into a broad offer that benefits the whole community.”

Overweight men in Wigan can fight fat through a mix of free weight-loss programmes focused on football, rugby, technology and nutrition, offered by Wigan Council and Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles in partnership with Wigan Athletic Community Trust and Wigan Warriors Foundation.

Kate Ardern said: “Lose Weight, Feel Great FOR MEN is an innovative weight management service, delivered by key local partners, which offers choice and support for local men to lose weight in a way that suits them and ultimately improves their health. The service is part of the wider Lose Weight, Feel Great pathway which offers support for local people to take charge of their health.”
