Assured display from Latics as they earn another valuable three points
- Match Report: Wigan Athletic 3-0 Oldham Athletic.
- Latics make it four straight Sky Bet League One wins.
- Will Grigg, James Vaughan and Nick Powell all on target.
Latics celebrated manager Paul Cook’s 50th game in charge by registering their fourth straight Sky Bet League One win this afternoon to maintain the club’s promotion push.
Will Grigg netted the game’s opener on 40 minutes when he latched onto Nick Powell's pass down the right to finish from a tight angle for his 19th goal in all competitions this season.
Vaughan was introduced for Grigg at the break and made an immediate impression by extending the lead in the 48th minute as he reacted to a mistake at the back to blast the ball Johny Placide.
Powell added a third on 65 minutes as he rode a couple of challenges to burst forward and fire a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Cook made two changes to the team that beat Bury last weekend, with captain Samy Morsy returning in place of Jay Fulton and Grigg starting instead of Vaughan.
Powell was denied early on when he went on a weaving run before shooting low at Placide, only for the Haitian goalkeeper to tip his effort wide of the far post.
In response, Dan Gardner picked the ball up some 20 yards from goal and shot at Christian Walton, but the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee was equal to his strike.
Ryan Colclough, making his 50th appearance for the club, was later thwarted by Placide from close range with the rebound bouncing to Grigg who hooked a shot over the bar.
Eoin Doyle then wasted a golden opportunity for the visitors 10 minutes before the break when he got the better of the home defence to race through on goal only to send a tame shot at Walton.
Placide was called into action in the 39th minute to keep out Jacobs from inside the area, but he could do nothing moments later to stop Grigg netting from a tight angle.
Vaughan replaced Grigg at half time and it took him only three minutes to double the advantage as he capitalised on a defensive error to hammer the ball past Placide.
Doyle’s back post volley was excellently blocked by Callum Elder on the hour after some good play from visiting substitute Patrick McEleney down the left.
Powell got himself on the scoresheet shortly after when he skipped past two tackles to burst into the area and fire a low shot into the bottom corner.
The midfielder was denied his second of the afternoon when his goalbound effort inside the area was deflected wide by a defender.
Michael Jacobs nearly made it four late on after being played in on goal by Gavin Massey, but Placide did well at his near post to keep the effort out.
