Wigan Athletic’s under-18s continued their fine season with a dominant 3-0 victory over Bury on Saturday morning.
Mwiya Malumo (2) and Jamie Cotter got the goals for Nick Chadwick’s side, who remain top of the EFL Youth Alliance, nine points ahead of 2nd place Rochdale, who have four games in hand.
Saturday’s visitors to Christopher Park were Bury and the Shakers couldn’t have got off to a worse start, going down to ten men when Ryan Cooney was sent off in the first minute for a terrible challenge on Tylor Golden.
Latics’ opener came after just eight minutes when Tom Hilton and Joe Downey linked up to feed Malumo, who saw his shot saved before Cotter fired home the rebound.
Six minutes later and Latics’ second came when Golden picked up a loose ball and played Charlie Jolley in behind with the forward seeing his effort saved before Malumo tapped home at close range.
The third came just after the half hour as Will McGuffie intercepted in the Bury half and was able to drive forward before playing in Malumo, who finished when one-on-one with the Bury keeper.
In difficult conditions, Latics got another useful win which continues their successful calendar year.
