Wigan Athletic's under-18s ran out comprehensive 4-1 winners against Carlisle United on Tuesday afternoon at Christopher Park to extend their lead at the top of the EFL Youth Alliance.

Goals from Victor Maffeo, Mitchell Culshaw, Jamie Cotter and Charlie Jolley secured the win for Nick Chadwick's side, who now lead 2nd place Rochdale by nine points, albeit Dale have four games in hand.

Latics went ahead after a tight opening half hour when James Berry excellently skipped away from his man on the right before being brought down in the penalty area. A penalty was awarded and Maffeo stepped up to fire comfortably to the Carlisle keeper's bottom left.

Maffeo was involved as Latics made it 2-0 soon after; his cross-field run resulting in a pass to Culshaw who emphatically fired home a superb effort from the angle of the penalty area, leaving the Cumbrians' keeper with no chance.

Latics put the game to bed early in the second-half when Cotter finished well after the second phase of a set-piece fell into his path.

Carlisle got a goal back on the break almost immediately but and excellent fourth came for Chadwick's side when Divin Baningime broke on the right and cut-back for Jolley, who finished well at close range.

Latics: Perrin; Golden, Plant, Long (B. Roberts 76), Maffeo; Downey, Cotter, Culshaw (McGuffie 40), Berry (Joseph 46) Jolley (Smith 76), Baningime (Hilton 67).
