- Latics have won four of their last five games to extend lead at the top of the EFL Youth Alliance
Wigan Athletic’s under-18s ran out 1-0 winners in Staffordshire on Saturday afternoon as a Charlie Jolley goal proved decisive against Port Vale.
Jolley’s goal came just before the hour mark as Nick Chadwick’s side extended their top of the EFL Youth Alliance to 12 points, albeit Rochdale in 2nd place have five games in hand.
In the first-half, Jamie Cotter was denied by a good save, Jolley hit the bar and Tom Hilton also went close from a Joe Downey corner.
It wasn’t all Latics, though, as Port Vale hit the bar with a curling effort from the side.
The goal came after 11 second-half minutes, though as Tylor Golden won the ball back in midfielder and played the in-form Jolley through to poke home the decisive strike.
Goal came from golden winning the ball back in midfield driving forward and sliding Jolley in into the box to poke past keeper
Downey and Hilton had further chances for Latics, who defended well and held on for the three points against a physical Vale side.
