Latics made light work of their EFL Youth Alliance Cup area final with a thumping 5-0 victory over Hartlepool United to book their place in the national final against Luton Town.

Leading goal scorers Mwiya Malumo and Charlie Jolley gave Latics a two-goal cushion in the first half, before Jamie Cotter and trialist Holsgrove provided sweet strikes for three and four-nil, with defender Tom Hilton heading home the fifth to round off a powerful victory.

The strength of Malumo proved too much for visitors Hartlepool early on when the striker netted his 21st goal in all competitions at close range.

Malumo's opener inside the first quarter of an hour could have been added to on multiple occasions, as Will McGuffie saw a header cleared off the line and Jolley was later denied one-on-one.

Jolley's goal did come eventually, and with four minutes of the first half remaining the striker danced through Hartlepool's midfield like something akin to Nick Powell's goal for the first team against Oldham Athletic, before playing a neat one-two with Malumo for a close range finish.

Hartlepool closed things up in the opening stages of the second half and frustrated Latics for a period, but Nick Chadwick's side were soon back in the driving seat.

Cotter's goal for Latics' third looked like it was going to be the strike of the game when he controlled the ball on the edge of the area and rifled it across the Hartlepool keeper to find the bottom right corner, but six minutes later trialist substitute Holsgrove whipped a left footed effort in off the left post for 4-0.

With Joe Downey replaced by Scott Smith late on, Hilton was saw the game out as captain and led by example when he rose above the visiting defence to power home Victor Maffeo's corner for 5-0.

Latics: Roberts, Golden, Maffeo, Plant, Hilton, McGuffie (Holsgrove 76), Baningime (Culshaw 67), Downey (Capt) (Smith 79), Malumo, Jolley (Joseph 73), Cotter
