Speaking to iFollow Latics at the Wigan Athletic Training Centre on Friday morning, first team coach Anthony Barry looked ahead to this weekend's trip to Bury in Sky Bet League One.
AB on the amount of goals scored
"Both ends are important to us because our clean sheet record is fantastic too, so both sides of the game are really flourishing at the moment and we must stay on that."
AB on team news
"Everyone’s fit and everyone’s raring to go. It’s been a tough set of fixtures in terms of the time scale and the recovery, so training has been very light in between games because it’s all been about rest and recuperation and just going and getting ready for the next game."
AB on Shaun MacDonald’s involvement against Mansfield in midweek
"It was fantastic for Shaun to play because he had a setback not too long ago which was tough for both us and for him. He’s been a massive miss for us as he’s a great player and a fantastic lad around the place so it was nice for him to get back on the pitch. He hit all the scores we wanted him to do with his running and his distance so it was a landmark day for Shaun.
"It’s tough to judge when you come back from these type of injuries because you’re not only looking for fitness you’re looking for form and confidence. When lads get these sort of injuries they also get injured upstairs because they struggle to get back involved in challenges and stuff like that, so Shaun’s still got a little bit of a way to go but he’s working really well so hopefully he’ll be back sooner rather than later."
AB on the possibility of returning to the top of the table this weekend
"We know how many games we’ve got left and how many points we want to acquire and that doesn’t change whether Blackburn play or not. We’ve got a tough game at Bury on Saturday and it’s a game they must really go and win so it’s a massive one for us and doesn’t really affect us if Blackburn are playing."
AB on pressure
"You have to enjoy pressure because it comes with big games and if you don’t feel pressure you’re probably not involved in big games. When we came back in pre-season these were the sort of games we wanted to be involved in so we must enjoy them. We’ll take it on our shoulders and show what we can do."
AB on away form
"In general I think teams come at us a little bit more away from home so that gives us more space to go and play. The lads like going on the road and we tell them to go and express themselves, and certainly in away games they go out and do that. Teams do sit in a little bit more against us at home and it can become quite hard to break down, but in general this group have done everything we’ve asked them, whether that be home or away."
AB on Bury
"Ryan Lowe’s done a fantastic job since he’s gone in there. He’s a young coach who has now gone onto manage and their record has turned around a lot since he’s took over.
"He’s got a style of play he believes in but in general when we’ve studied Bury they’ve got a fantastic squad, especially for this level, and have great players that a lot of other clubs would like to have in their ranks. They’re in a position you look at and think should they really be there? Possibly not, so on the back of that we know how tough Saturday will be."
AB on Ryan Lowe
"He went in as interim originally before Chris Lucketti and now he’s back for his second go so I’m sure he’s learning all the time. He’s a massive personality so the fact he has turned that place around is no surprise to me because he’s got a personality that’s infectious and can lift people. It’s a baptism of fire for him but Bury means a lot to Ryan and it’s showing in their performances."
AB on what he expects from Bury
"Bury will fight, come after us, press and be aggressive and we’ve watched a lot of their footage and they’re a good team. He’s making his mark on the side and as I keep saying we’re under no illusion that it’ll be a tough game for us."
AB on the attacking options
"It’s great to have so many attacking options and they’re all fantastic players. We managed to get a good rest into Gavin Massey on Wednesday and it’s all important they have a role. Ryan Colclough came on and did great, so it’s a good problem to have because we have a lot of players wanting to play minutes."
AB on the travelling support
"It makes a massive difference to us when you can feel the fans behind you. It’s a great feeling when you walk out onto the pitch and can see them all behind the goal. We know they’ll be travelling over in their numbers to Bury and it really is important that we enjoy the fans being behind us so hopefully we can give them something back with our style of play and winning games. There’s a feel good factor about the place and the fans are a massive part in that. They’ve obviously enjoyed the cup run but that’s over now and we’ve got 11 cup finals and hopefully they get behind us."
