Perks ends three-year stay at the DW Stadium to link up with former teammate and manager Keith Hill at Rochdale.
- David Perkins leaves Wigan Athletic to sign for Rochdale AFC
- Perkins, 35, has signed a two-year deal at the Crown Oil Arena
- Perkins played 98 matches over three seasons for Latics and won all three End of Season awards at the end of his first campaign with the club in 2015-16
There is a saying that all good things come to an end and today that is the case at Wigan Athletic as midfielder David Perkins has agreed to sign for Rochdale on a two-year deal as of 1 July.
Perkins, who turns 36 in June, has been a DW Stadium favourite since becoming the club’s first signing of the summer ahead of the 2015-16 season.
Little did we know then what a popular figure Perks would turn out to be, and perhaps the term cult hero would be unfair on a player who collected the Supporters’ Player of The Year, Players’ Player of The Year and Away Player of the Year in his debut campaign.
Infectious around the training ground, no teammate or member of staff would argue there was an individual more popular at the club than Perks, but it was in the stands where that impact swelled as 82 appearances into a Latics career in which he’d always been a solid performer the only thing missing was a goal.
Storm Brian, Blackpool away, over 2,500 Tics backing their side on the road, the scene was set.
One of the highlights of the season no doubt and the scenes at the end with supporters standing in the rain belting out ‘It’s Perkins, You Know’ were special.
Perks will leave us just shy of 100 appearances in all competitions but he leaves with the best wishes of everyone associated with the club, with great gratitude for his contribution over the last three years.
Thank you Perks!
