Latics captured the Lancashire FA Youth Cup on Saturday afternoon with what turned out to be a thumping 4-1 victory over local rivals Preston North End.

Hosted at Latics' Christopher Park (although Latics were considered the 'away' team), Nick Chadwick's side basked in the early morning sunshine and in glory, as goals from Brad Roberts, Divin Banignime, Joe Gelhardt and Victor Maffeo saw his young charges lift the trophy.

Preston battled hard, particularly in the opening 45 minutes, but Latics' quality showed through in the second half to push the final well beyond North End.

Roberts gave Latics the lead inside 12 minutes with a tight angled finish, before Preston equalised shortly after the half an hour mark when Lewis Fensome bundled the ball home from a corner.

It didn't take long for Latics to regain their lead, with Baningime on target despite taking a clattering knock in the process.

Latics continued to carve out opportunities but had to remain strong at the back and had goalkeeper Jordan Perrin to thank when he made a double save before the break.

The second half proved too much for Preston and in the final 10 minutes Latics turned the screw. Substitute Gelhardt once again showed why he's an England youth international when he latched onto the end of a free kick in the area and slammed a low shot home for 3-1, before Spanish full back Maffeo followed in a blocked shot for Latics' fourth.

It was jubilation for the Academy, just hours before Latics' first team rounded off a sensational day for the club with the League One title win at Doncaster Rovers. A proud day all round for Wigan Athletic.

Latics: Perrin, Golden, Roberts, Plant, Hilton, McGuffie (Weir 45), Culshaw, Downey (Capt), Malumo, Jolley (Gelhardt 45), Baningime (Maffeo 53)
