Latics have today been announced as winners of this season’s Emirates FA Cup award for the biggest cup shock in this season’s competition.
Our stunning Fifth Round victory against Premier League winners Manchester City was sealed by Will Grigg’s 79th minute strike and is a night that will live long in the memory of players, staff and supporters alike at the DW Stadium.
Latics amassed 66% of the public votes on thefa.com. Coventry City came in second place for their performance in beating Stoke City in the Third Round.
The award will be presented to Jonathan Jackson, the club’s Chief Executive and Director, at Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup Final. The presentation will be made by Ronnie Radford, scorer of one of the most memorable FA Cup giant-killing goals for Hereford United against Newcastle United in 1972.
On receiving the award, Latics boss Paul Cook said:
“The win over Manchester City was one of the greatest victories in my career to date and the players deserve immense credit for the way they played. We felt we could break the game down into 15 minute phases and absorb some pressure before having a little go ourselves, but we couldn’t get out – Manchester City were that good.
“We actually managed to create some chances; Nick Powell, Gary Roberts and Will Grigg all had opportunities in the first-half. However, it was down to Will’s moment in the second-half and what a finish it was from him.
“Our player’s stats during the game were incredible, we had some lads running near twice what they would in a regular league game.
“It was a special night in our club’s history and credit must go to the players for their amazing efforts. We are delighted to receive the Emirates FA Cup Giant Killing Award.”
Andy Ambler, The FA’s Director of Professional Game Relations said:
“The achievements of all four clubs in being nominated demonstrates why the Emirates FA Cup remains so loved and revered. The award is voted for by the fans and it is fitting that Wigan Athletic’s victory against Manchester City is recognised with this accolade. It was a special evening, which grabbed headlines not just in this country but across the world.”
