2018-19 Season Cards

Our countdown to #FixtureReleaseDay on Thursday 21 June continues, with our second instalment of Three of a Kind focusing on previous clashes with the Blues... Birmingham City!

Wigan Athletic 2 Birmingham City 0 - Saturday 15 April 2008

Latics were looking for a hero and a couple more victories to save their Premier League status in 2007-08... step forward Ryan Taylor!

A sweet left footed drive in the first half followed by a scruffy, if not effective, close range finish in the second sowed up a 2-0 victory over Birmingham City, who were left red-faced after captain Damien Johnson was sent off for a crunching first half challenge on Kevin Kilbane.

The victory sparked a five game unbeaten run for Steve Bruce's Latics in which they picked up draws against Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Reading, before sealing their Premier League status for another year with a 2-0 win against Blues' local rivals Aston Villa.

Taylor may have been the man on the double for Latics, but the afternoon was also a memorable one for Maynor Figueroa... the Honduran made his debut as a late substitute and the rest is history!

Birmingham City 0 Wigan Athletic 1 - Tuesday 29 April 2014

Latics needed just one more victory in their 60th game of the 2013-14 campaign to seal a place in the Sky Bet Championship play-offs, and the gruelling nature of their mammoth season was certainly apparent at St Andrew's, but only after a lightning quick start from Callum McManaman inside the opening three minutes.

McManaman and co. were made to battle for the three points thereafter, but with the crucial goal already in the bag early on, returning club captain Gary Caldwell and his defence put in a stellar performance to keep out the hosts and book that spot in the division's annual lottery.

Birmingham City: Randolph, Hancox, Spector, Caddis, Burke, Adeyemi (Shinnie 83), Allan (Ibe 60), Huws, Mullins, Macheda, Novak (Zigic 45)
Subs: Doyle, Martin, Reilly, Gray

Subs: Al Habsi, Crainey, Espinoza, Collison

Birmingham City 0 Wigan Athletic 1 - Tuesday 7 March 2017

There are plenty more meetings with Birmingham City we could mention, and this isn't a classic in terms of its impact on a particular season, but the evening in March marks Dan Burn's first goal in Latics colours!

Five goals in Sky Bet League One have followed on his way to captaining Latics to the league title, and it was apparent from this finish at St Andrew's in 2017 just how clinical Superman can be in the penalty area.

Birmingham City: Kuszczak, Robinson, Shotton, Cogley (Jutkiewicz 45), Keita, Nsue, Kieftenbeld (Frei 45), Tesche, Gardner, Davis (Maghoma 86), Adams
Subs: Legzdins, Grounds, Bielik, Gleeson

Latics: Gilks, Buxton, Connolly, Warnock, Burn, Power (Perkins 44), Gilbey (Weir 78), Obertan (Laurent 73), Jacobs, Hanson, Bogle
Subs: Evans, Bruce, Colclough, Mandron
