Wigan Athletic were denied a winning return to Sky Bet Championship action despite a number of first-half chances as Reading travelled back to Berkshire with a point following a 0-0 draw at the DW Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Latics had the better chances on the afternoon but couldn’t find a killer touch in the final third and, when they did, Nick Powell saw an effort ruled out for offside against Reece James.
Paul Cook made two changes to the side that lost at Middlesbrough prior to the international break as Samy Morsy and Kal Naismith returned to the starting XI.
Cook’s side started the better and created chances from the off as Dan Burn headed wide from a Gary Roberts delivery before Cedric Kipre also headed off target when trying to divert a Naismith flick-on towards goal.
At the other end, Yakou Meite was denied a shot on goal by Burn before Powell forced the first of a few top saves from Anssi Jaakkola in the Reading goal as the stopper tipped over his 25-yard drive.
From the resulting corner, Powell headed in but James was adjudged to have been offside when he played a one-two with Gary Roberts from the corner.
Kipre was again denied by Jaakkola before Latics had arguably their best chance of the half when Nathan Byrne headed wide at the back post from a Powell flick-on.
Josh Windass then tried his own luck with a clean strike from another Naismith cross, he couldn’t have hit it sweeter but Jaakkola managed to divert it wide.
Latics weren’t as fluent in the second-half but still created some openings, the first of which they will again wonder how they didn’t break the deadlock as a sensational switch of play from James found Roberts, who saw his shot saved before Windass dragged the follow up wide.
Byrne tried his look from range as he still goes in search of a first Latics goal before Darron Gibson almost scored one of the great DW goals with a rifled drive from 30 yards, only to see his effort fly just wide with Jaakkola rooted to the spot.
Latics pushed until the end with Will Grigg and Joe Garner late introductions, the latter seeing an effort blocked at close range from a James corner.
Cook’s side couldn’t find a winner, though, and instead drop one place to 17th in the Sky Bet Championship table
