Wigan Athletic forward Gary Roberts says Latics thoroughly deserved their 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night, in which he scored his first goal of the season.
Speaking post-match with iFollow Latics, Roberts said:
“It has been coming; I have had a couple of chances here and there but it was nice to see the ball hit the back of the net and take the lead, which I thought we deserved.
“I went and played on the right to come inside and the left back stayed off me, he let me go inside and once I got the chance I had to pull the trigger and it was nice to see it go in.
“I thought we deserved to win on Saturday but it just wouldn’t go in for us. However, it has been a good week for us up to now and we have another tough derby on Saturday which we will rest up for and hopefully get another three points.”
On a personal note, Roberts added that he is delighted to be featuring more than most would have expected.
“I came back in pre-season and my chances looked limited with such good players in the squad and the fact the gaffer brought more players in,” he continued.
“But with injuries, I have seen more of a chance and hopefully I can stay in the team now.”
And Roberts’ car school buddy Callum McManaman also got in the act.
“It was great to see Callum McManaman come on and score,” he continued. “He has been electric lately and it was great to see him come on and get a goal but I think I pipped him for the goal of the day.”
