Preston North End 1 Wigan Athletic 4 - Saturday 28 August 1999
A superb Stuart Barlow hat-trick helped Latics to their first away win of the 1999-2000 season, triumphing 4-1 at local rivals Preston North End, with Simon Haworth also on the scoresheet!
The victory made it a four-match unbeaten start to the campaign, a sequence which stretched to 24 in the league.
Preston actually took the lead early in the first half through Steve Basham, but when North End keeper David Lucas was sent off and conceded a penalty, Latics didn't look back.
Barlow converted from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time to equalise, before putting Latics ahead two minutes after the restart. Haworth made it 3-1 with seven minutes remaining, with Barlow grabbing the match ball two minutes from time to secure a memorable win at Deepdale.

The January signing from West Bromwich Albion shocked the Deepdale crowd in agame which saw Latics collect another high scoring victory over North End.
Dickson Etuhu equalised for the hosts on the half an hour mark, but Paul Jewell's side quickly regained control, with Roberts' strike partner Nathan Ellington netting just before half time to put Latics ahead.
Gary Teale pushed us 3-1 ahead, before Ellington grabbed his second 10 minutes from time. Graham Alexander cut the deficit from the penalty spot, but it was too late as Latics ran out 4-2 winners.

After four matches without a victory and off the back of consecutive draws, Paul Jewell's Latics needed a victory heading into a busy Christmas period, so a 5-0 thrashing of local rivals Preston couldn't have happened at a better time.
Lee McCulloch opened the scoring midway into the first half, with the remaining four goals all scored in the second half. Alan Mahon, Nathan Ellington (2) and Jason Roberts (pen) helped provide a vintage derby day win.
