Sports stars of the future and dedicated volunteers from grassroots clubs across Wigan recently celebrated the Believe Sports Awards at the DW Stadium – an event that saw Wigan Athletic Community Trust coach Tom Little named Apprentice of the Year.

Organised by Inspiring healthy lifestyles and sponsored by Wigan Council, hundreds of guests were in attendance at the awards which celebrated the borough’s sports heroes.

Tom first joined Latics as an apprentice in 2015, along with Danny O’Connor who was also shortlisted for the award, and helped to deliver sports sessions at various primary schools as well as supporting the running of the Premier League Kicks programme.

He now studies a Foundation Degree in football coaching with the University of South Wales, and his commitment and dedication was recognised by the judging panel and he received his award from Olympian Jenny Meadows, Trustee of the Community Trust.

He said: “It was a great feeling to win the award and I’d like to thank everyone at the Trust for the support they’ve given me since I started. I’m really passionate about coaching and feel I have developed a lot in a short space of time, so I’m proud to have been recognised for this.”

Latics were celebrating the success of this award for a second consecutive year, with the Trust's sports coach Jack Brooker named the winner in 2017.

Tom Flower, Head of Community at the Trust, said: “Tom and Danny deserve credit for their shortlisting and we’re proud of their achievements, but I’d like to thank all of our apprentices for their continued hard work and dedication.
