  • Latics’ under 15s begin Premier League Floodlit Cup Group Stages with 2-0 win over Liverpool
  • Latics beat category two academies Crewe Alexandra and Sheffield Wednesday to progresses through the qualifying stages earlier this month
  • Latics next face Everton at Finch Farm on 7 November

Wigan Athletic’s under-15s kicked off the group stages of their Premier League Floodlit Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Liverpool at Lancashire FA on Wednesday night.

The win came after the current crop of Latics U15s became the first to progress to the finals in the club’s history, after progressing through their qualifying group against Category Two academies, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Crewe Alexandra and Sheffield Wednesday.

Wins over Crewe (1-0) and Sheffield Wednesday (2-0) secured progress, as well as a 0-0 draw with Burnley at Christopher Park earlier this month.

Currently in Latics’ group are Everton and Rochdale, with Latics’ next clash against the Toffees at Finch Farm on 7 November.

The top two teams from the group (after each side has played home and away against one another) will progress to the last 16 in the new year.

Speaking about Latics’ achievements so far, youth development phase coach Kieran Driscoll said:

“The boys have been excellent and should be very proud to be the first Wigan Athletic group of their age to progress to the next stage of the Floodlit Cup.

“Against Liverpool on Wednesday, the boys were outstanding; we had a gameplan we had worked on in advance and they executed it extremely well, which was really pleasing.

“We had to play with a different style because we knew against Liverpool we would be up against good players and perhaps would see less of the ball, but the boys played with a real discipline and deserved a really good result after a strong performance.”
