Latics made it three home games unbeaten in the Sky Bet Championship this afternoon as James Vaughan's 73rd minute goal proved the difference against Rotherham United.

The substitute was the quickest to pounce on Marek Rodak’s save to deny Callum McManaman and poke the rebound into an empty net.

Paul Cook made two changes to his side for the visit of the Millers, with Reece James and Callum Connolly starting in place of Nathan Byrne and Gavin Massey.

Chey Dunkley forced visiting keeper Rodak into an early save when he connected well with Lee Evans’ superb free kick to head low at the Slovak.

Antonee Robinson was causing all kinds of problems down the left hand side, and was twice denied in good positions by some last-ditch challenges.

Connolly went close to giving Latics the lead on 20 minutes when he met Josh Windass’ drilled corner only to head into the side netting at the near post.

Windass himself then almost curled a brilliant free kick into the top corner from 25 yards, missing the target by the narrowest of margins on his home debut.

Nick Powell was later challenged in the area but the referee waved away his penalty claims, while Windass dragged a shot wide of the post just before the break.

The visitors threatened at the start of the second period, with Joe Mattock’s header from Ryan Williams’ free kick testing Walton in the home goal.

In reply, Will Grigg sent a fizzing effort past Rodak’s near post, before Cook made a double change on the hour by bringing on McManaman and Vaughan for Powell and Grigg.

The move would pay off for Latics as Vaughan netted his first of the season with just over 15 minutes remaining when he poked the ball home on the rebound after McManaman’s initial shot was saved.

The Millers pressed for an equaliser late on and Walton pulled off an outstanding low save to deny Williams from the edge of the box.
