Latics moved up to 3rd in the Sky Bet Championship on Friday evening as Nick Powell’s header proved the difference against Bristol City at the DW Stadium.

On a tense evening, where both sides had the 3rd spot in the Championship table in their sights, Powell’s second-half goal earned a valuable three points for Paul Cook’s side, who won their fourth game out of five on their own patch this campaign.

Injuries to Will Grigg and James Vaughan meant Cook handed a first Latics start to Joe Garner in the only change to Latics’ side from Tuesday’s win over Hull City.

Early on, Latics were thankful to Cedric Kipre after Andreas Weimann looked to have a chance to score from a short Antonee Robinson back pass, though from their Latics took control.

Michael Jacobs had an early penalty shout turned down before he then fired over from 25 yards after a driving run on 22 minutes.

Powell was at the centre of everything again for Latics and he dragged a shot wide from the edge of the area six minutes later as Cook’s side searched for the opener before half-time.

After the restart, Latics took immediate aim on asserting their advantage and Josh Windass was inches from heading a Reece James cross home.

Windass turned provider minutes later, though, crossing wonderfully for Powell to rise and head home his fourth goal of the season.

Windass dragged wide when looking for his second goal in as many matches on the hour mark before Latics needed a rear-guard action to protect their lead.

In the main they did well, although they were thankful to their keeper Christian Walton in the 94th minute as he saved from Famara Diedhiou.

Another huge win for Latics, who end another busy week in positive fashion.
