Drama arrived at the newly opened JJB Stadium in just its second league match!

Having thrashed Scunthorpe United 3-0 in the stadium's opening competitive fixture two weeks previous, Latics made a fast start to this one, with Stuart Barlow curling in a perfect finish to beat Steve Phillips in the Bristol City goal.

Latics looked in control, but a penalty from Tony Thorpe with 18 minutes to play left the hosts sweating to maintain a winning record at their new home... cue a stoppage time melee and a thunderous close range finish from hero of the hour, Simon Haworth!

The victory was part of a 13-match unbeaten start to life at the new stadium in the league, a run which stretched until after the New Year.

Wigan Athletic 2 Bristol City 0 - Saturday 17 August 2002

Goals from Scott Green and Lee McCulloch late in the second half formed part of our best ever start to a season in the EFL, with victories over Cheltenham Town and Mansfield Town before it, followed by a 2-0 win at Notts County to set a new record of four straight victories at the start of a campaign.

It was the perfect start to what would ultimately become a landmark season in the club's history, ending in promotion to the second tier for the first time.

A stunning passing move opened up space for Green to turn in the opening goal on 75 minutes, space freed up by the sending off of Daniel Coles for a shocking tackle from behind on Nathan Ellington.

McCulloch secured the points in stoppage time with a beautiful low drive from distance to beat Steve Phillips in his bottom right corner.

Bristol City 0 Wigan Athletic 1 - Friday 10 January 2003

Having won the first meeting 2-0 at the JJB Stadium back at the start of the season, Latics were looking to make it a double over Bristol City , but more importantly wanted to collect a 10th consecutive victory, something they succeeded in thanks to Peter Kennedy's stylish free kick and first goal for the club.

The win formed part of the club's best ever streak of 11 matches, extended the following week thanks to a 2-1 victory over Colchester United.

11 straight wins went a long way to the end goal for the season... promotion to the second tier for the first time in our history.
