It has been another proud week for Wigan Athletic’s academy as two of our first-year scholars, Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir, helped England U17 to win the 2018 Syrenka Cup in Poland.
In the past week, Gelhardt and Weir have helped England U17s to wins over Norway (6-0), Portugal (2-1) and Belgium (6-2).
Gelhardt scored twice in the win over Norway and came off the bench to score in the 6-2 victory over Belgium this afternoon.
Academy Manager Gregor Rioch said:
“We are immensely proud of Joe and Jensen’s achievements and congratulate them on a superb week away in Poland.
“It can’t be underestimated how much international football will aid their respective developments.
“For our academy, it is another rewarding week for so many staff who continue to work with a passion and desire to produce the best players we can for Wigan Athletic.”
