Jordy de Wijs scored an 89th minute header to keep Hull City’s Sky Bet Championship play-off hopes alive as Latics’ away struggles continued at the KCOM Stadium.

Nick Powell’s seventh goal of the season had given Latics a first-half lead but Fraizer Campbell levelled early in the second 45 for the hosts.

Latics made one change from the starting XI that drew 2-2 away at Bristol City on Saturday, with Darron Gibson replacing Cedric Kipre. Anthony Pilkington, who scored the late equaliser at Ashton Gate, missed out due to injury.

Paul Cook’s side started brightly with Powell firing over from range before Joe Garner headed off target from a Reece James cross.

At the other end, Gibson made a vital interception to deny Jackson Irvine when well placed before Christian Walton produced a fine save to deny Jarrod Bowen.

Hull looked the more likely in a ten minute period before Latics got their opener as Marc Pugh hit the bar and Kamil Grosicki volleyed wide.

However, Latics got their opener on the stroke of half-time as Powell met a James cross and finished well inside the penalty area.

The lead lasted just six second-half minutes, though, as Grosicki shot from the edge of the area and Walton couldn’t claim cleanly, with Campbell pouncing on the follow up.

Latics had a great chance to regain the lead when Gavin Massey headed a Josh Windass corner towards goal, but David Marshall saved bravely.

The game looked to be heading to a draw but Latics surrendered another valuable point as de Wijs headed in from an 89th minute corner.
