Wigan Athletic were held to a 1-1 draw by Sky Bet Championship leaders Norwich City at the DW Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with late drama almost seeing Paul Cook’s side grab all three points.

Reece James put Latics in front from the penalty spot but Teemu Pukki scored late on to edge the Canaries closer to the Premier League and keep Cook’s side in the fight to stay in the division come May.

Leon Clarke headed in late on for Latics but the goal was ruled out in a tight offside call.

Latics made four changes to their starting XI from Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to Hull City, with Lee Evans, Gavin Massey, Kal Naismith and Clarke all coming in for Darron Gibson, Josh Windass, Nick Powell and Joe Garner.

Anthony Pilkington, Michael Jacobs, Gary Roberts and Callum McManaman remain sidelined through injury.

Latics started well and pressed with good energy, earning the first big chance when Massey was played in on the right by Evans after good play by Clarke. The winger, however, fired wide when looking to find Tim Krul’s bottom right hand corner.

Samy Morsy shot wide from 25 yards and Clarke headed over at the back post from a James delivery as Latics battled for the opener.

They thought they had it on 38 minutes when an Antonee Robinson cross found Evans and the Wales international’s header was smartly saved by Krul.

However, Latics did take the lead on the stroke of half-time as Morsy’s shot was blocked by the hand of Ben Godfrey, with referee James Linington pointing to the stop. James stepped up and dispatched the penalty with unbelievable confidence in a high pressure moment.

After the restart, the league leaders offered more three immediately as Onel Hernandez was denied by Christian Walton at his near post.

Moments later, though, James nearly got his and Latics’ second as he drove towards goal and fired just over from 25 yards.

Walton saved from Pukki again on the hour mark and from the resulting corner Godfrey headed over as the visitors upped their pursuit of a result to aid their bid for promotion to the Premier League.

Latics had a great chance for a second after Naismith’s excellent run presented the opportunity to plan in Clarke, who stayed composed but was thwarted by an excellent Krul save.

James hit a free-kick just over and Robinson fired wide on his weaker right foot as Latics looked the more likely to score the next goal.

However, ten minutes from time Norwich countered and Pukki finished excellently on the left of the penalty area to give the Canaries an equaliser.

Latics thought they’d won it late on as Clarke headed in a James free-kick in stoppage time but the goal was ruled out for offside.

At the other end, Stiepermann could have won it for Norwich but his effort was saved by Walton in a nervy finish.
