A fifth member of Latics' Under 18s set to receive international honours.

  • Internationals: MacKenzie O'Neill named in Northern Ireland U17 squad.
  • Attacking midfielder progressing well in his first year as a U18 apprentice.
  • O'Neill involved in Latics' 24-match unbeaten start to the 2018/19 season.

Congratulations to MacKenzie O'Neill who has been selected for Northern Ireland's Under 17 squad to face Greece in two matches later this month.

The 17-year-old, who recently returned to action and scored in Latics' 5-0 away victory at Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Youth Alliance, could feature across the two fixtures against Greece on Tuesday 19 February and Thursday 21 February.

The attacking midfielder is the fifth member of Latics' unbeaten Under 18 side to be called up for his country this season, joining Joe Gelhardt (England U17), Jensen Weir (England U17), Kyle Joseph (Scotland U18+U19) and Luke Robinson (Scotland U18) as the team's youth international representatives.

Speaking about MacKenzie, Head of Academy, Gregor Rioch said:

“MacKenzie’s recognition is another excellent piece of news for the Academy. It’s testament to the hard work he’s been putting in during his first year as an apprentice/scholar at the club and it comes at the perfect time for his personal development.

“We now have five youth internationals within the Under 18 squad and it’s very pleasing to see that the work within the group and the performances and results we have been achieving are being recognised by the home nations.

“I’d like to congratulate MacKenzie on his call up, alongside the staff and coaches who have and continue to work with him on a day-to-day basis.”
