“I train at the DW Stadium every week… it doesn’t get much better than that!”
The words of Alan Adams, a Lose Weight, Feel Great FOR MEN participant, who shares his experiences of the programme as part of National Obesity Awareness Week.
The Wigan Council and Inspiring healthy lifestyles scheme, delivered in partnership by Wigan Athletic Community Trust and Wigan Warriors Foundation, supports men who are fighting against excess weight and obesity by delivering free weekly fitness and nutrition sessions at the DW Stadium.
“The main reason I joined the project was to obviously lose weight because I felt very unfit and wanted to make a change to the way I felt and looked.
“I’m 63-years old and something I didn’t want to do was join a gym as I’d feel uncomfortable doing that, so I found out about Lose Weight, Feel Great FOR MEN through Wigan Athletic’s website and decided to give it a go. I’ve lost eight pounds so far and haven’t really looked back since.”
And one of the best things about the programme for Alan is the support given to him by the coaches and the strong bond amongst participants.
“I was made to feel welcome by everyone straight away and there’s a great set of lads involved in the sessions which makes it worthwhile coming every week.
“The camaraderie we all have is brilliant. Yes we’re all here to lose weight, but socially we have a Facebook page where after sessions we keep in touch and share meal ideas and so forth.
“The activities are keyed up to everyone’s abilities and I’ve managed to go to every single session so far which tells you everything you need to know about how much I enjoy the scheme.”
Describing what it is like to train at the DW Stadium each week, he continued: “It’s very special that the gym is the DW Stadium and it’s quite surreal saying that if I’m being honest.
“We were down pitch side inside the stadium during the light nights of the summer which was great because even being able to do a little bit of work next to the grass was incredible for a Latics fan like myself as it’s not something I’ve ever had the opportunity to do.
“I’ve been a supporter of Wigan Athletic for the past 25 years and just being able to say I’m training here at the DW Stadium is a great feeling. It gives me an extra incentive to come here and train.
“I’m really feeling the benefits and even though I’m in the later years of my life I’d still like to keep fit. I’m watching my food now and what I eat by looking at the different coloured labels of foods when I’m shopping, so as long as I get my six-pack for July’s holiday everything will be fine!
