Latics aim to build on their impressive end to 2018 when they host Morecambe in the Central League on Tuesday at Christopher Park, having gone unbeaten in their last four games in all competitions.

The development squad come off the back of a 2-2 draw with Huddersfield Town in December, with Latics coming back twice to secure a point at Canalside training ground, courtesy of goals from Under 18 stars Joe Gelhardt and Divin Baningime.

Latics’ last home game came against local rivals, Burnley, in October, when goals from Jensen Weir, Joe Gelhardt and Joe Piggott ensured a comfortable win, after they crashed out of the Lancashire FA Senior Cup earlier in the month, despite Kyle Joseph grabbing one back for the hosts in difficult conditions.

Meanwhile, Morecambe come into the game sitting in fourth place, despite losing three of their last five games in all competitions, most recently a 3-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town. Though, impressive wins over Mansfield Town and Macclesfield Town can provide some encouragement for The Shrimps.

Senior Professional Development Phase Coach, Nick Chadwick, said the players are high on confidence going into the game tomorrow:

“The senior players who have come into the team have equipped themselves well and their attitude has been first class, so we’re all looking forward to the game”, he said.

Chadwick also touched on an impressive away performance at Huddersfield Town last-time out:

“The players equipped themselves really well and I thought we were the much better the team and played some good football.

“I’m hopeful that if we play like that tomorrow then we can get something out of the game.”

Chadwick also spoke on the latest arrival, Ollie Crankshaw, who joined the development squad earlier in the month from National League North side, Curzon Ashton:

“We’ve watched him closely whilst he’s been with Curzon Ashton, he’s been with us for a while, so he is comfortable with the surroundings, the staff and the group of players”, he added.

“It’s great that we can develop him here on a daily basis, as well as game-days. He’s been in good-form and scored on the weekend too, so we’re delighted to have secured him to a contract and we look forward to seeing him more regularly.”

He also spoke about the form of Callum Lang, who recently scored the winner for Oldham in the FA Cup win over Fulham:

“He’s managed to grab a few headlines in the FA Cup, he’s gone out and made a real impact considering his age, not many players his age manage to start week-in, week-out like he has.

“He’s got to keep working hard and keep getting appearances next to his name.”

Chadwick will also be boosted with the return of Luke Burgess, who has temporarily returned from his loan spell at Barrow:

“Luke’s got to re-establish himself and look to get back into the team against Barrow, as well as impress for us.

“Joe Piggott is back with us from Morecambe, Ollie Crankshaw will be back with us and some Under 18s players will be pushing to play with the form they’ve been in.

“The competition is high for places and squad numbers, we’ve got good squad depth so we should have a strong team going into the fixture.”
