Mark Burrows claims joining the Lose Weight, Feel Great FOR MEN scheme, delivered in partnership between Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors, has been one of the best things he’s ever done.

The 49-year-old has been part of the programme since September 2018 and has seen his health improve significantly thanks to support from coaches from Latics and the Warriors.

Taking place at the DW Stadium every Tuesday night between 6.30pm – 8pm, the Wigan Council and Inspiring healthy lifestyles project, targets men across Wigan Borough with a BMI of 25 or over with sessions consisting of circuit training activities and expert weight loss advice.

As part of National Obesity Awareness Week, Mark said: “I used to be a lot fitter than what I was at the start of this scheme because I’d piled a few pounds on and didn’t feel great physically.

“I wanted to start doing something but didn’t know what, and it was my wife who actually encouraged me to take part in the scheme because a big thing for me was that I have two granddaughters and health wise I was going the wrong way so needed to do something extra.

“It was one of those where I was thinking should I go or should I not, but I decided to come down and try it out and I’m still coming now so it’s been really good for me and probably one of the best things I've ever done."

Mark admits he has clearly seen improvements in his fitness and overall wellbeing, crediting the support given to him by the town’s two major sporting teams.

“When I first started out on the scheme I could do everything they asked but only to a minimum standard. The ethos of it all is to have a go but do what you can and feel comfortable with, and as the weeks went by I broke that down, got a bit fitter and I’m feeling a lot healthier now.

“There’s a good group of lads taking part every week and Andy from Latics and Daz from the Warriors are two fantastic coaches who help you no end.

“The exercise is almost a second thing now because we all come along and do it every week and just enjoy it more than anything. We all have a laugh and a joke and enjoy being part of a group.”
