Wigan Athletic started off 2019 with a disappointing New Year’s Day defeat as Sheffield United continued their Sky Bet Championship promotion push with a 3-0 win at the DW Stadium.
Goals from David McGoldrick, Mark Duffy and Billy Sharp sealed the win for Chris Wilder’s side as they put the game to bed with two early second-half goals after McGoldrick’s opener.
Paul Cook made one change from the draw at Swansea City as Dan Burn completed his transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion, with Gary Roberts taking his place.
Latics were the first to create chances as Cedric Kipre and then Joe Garner headed off target from Kal Naismith and Roberts deliveries respectively.
Gavin Massey then went close on two occasions; first he saw a tame shot saved by Dean Henderson before a powerful drive from the edge of the area could only be parried by the Blades’ stopper, presenting Lee Evans with a great chance to score but he placed the ball wide.
Despite having the better chances for the majority of the first-half, Latics found themselves behind at the break. Kipre denied Enda Stevens with a brave block but from the resulting corner McGoldrick blasted home after Latics had failed to clear.
As half-time approached, Chey Dunkley denied McGoldrick with a good recovery challenge before Oliver Norwood clipped the outside of the post with a drive from 25 yards.
The game was killed early in the second-half as the Blades showed their promotion credentials with two quickfire goals on the break. Firstly, Henderson fired long for Sharp to get in between Darron Gibson and Dunkley and play in Duffy, who finished past Christian Walton.
Five minutes later and Sharp got in on the act as he tapped home a cross from McGoldrick.
Latics mustered little in response and drop to 20th in the Sky Bet Championship, still four points above the relegation zone.
