Steve Atkinson has paid tribute to the Lose Weight, Feel Great FOR MEN scheme for drastically improving his lifestyle after being encouraged to join the project by his doctor.

After a number of years of physical inactivity, 61-year-old Steve has been attending weekly fitness sessions delivered in partnership between Wigan Athletic Community Trust and Wigan Warriors Foundation at the DW Stadium for the past six weeks.

Lose Weight, Feel Great FOR MEN is one of Wigan Council and Inspiring healthy lifestyles’ flagship health programmes, with Latics and the Warriors helping to support the project by delivering free fitness and nutrition initiatives over a 12-week period.

The programme targets men living across the Wigan Borough who have a BMI of 25 or over, with sessions taking place at the DW Stadium every Tuesday night at 6.30pm – 8pm and consisting of circuit training activities and expert weight loss advice.

As part of National Obesity Awareness Week, Steve said: “I came to this programme through a referral from my doctor because I hadn’t done much exercise for a very long time and needed to change things about my lifestyle and how I looked after myself physically.

“Work has been very important to me over the past few years, but I’ve had to accept that leisure time and looking after yourself is just as important so I’ve been on this programme for two months now and it’s been great. There’s a good set of lads each week and they spur you on a little bit.”

Aiming to tackle excess weight and obesity, overweight men in Wigan can fight fat through a mix of free schemes focused on football, rugby, technology and nutrition as part of the programme.

“The sessions are really fun circuit training exercises and ball games but they definitely serve as a reminder on a Wednesday morning about the muscles I never thought I had!

“The coaches are absolutely superb and work to the needs of each individual, which is one of the best things about it all for me.”

Using the DW Stadium as a fitness hub, participants are inspired to lose weight through the scheme’s links with two of the town’s professional sports clubs.

“I’ve got a season ticket in the East Stand at the DW Stadium and it’s a good feeling when I look across to the West Stand on a match day to know that I train at this amazing place.

“Having the sessions here at the stadium is superb because it’s a totally different environment to a gym. You’ve got a bunch of lads here who want to achieve exactly the same things as you, so for me personally it works really well and I couldn’t recommend the programme enough.”
