Wigan Athletic forward Gary Roberts told iFollow Latics that Paul Cook’s side were back to their old best as they beat Aston Villa 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking post-match, Roberts said:
“I think we were back to our old best and it was one of our best performances for a good while.
“We have started like we did today a few times and we just haven’t quite got that first goal. Once we got that first goal today, though, you saw the confidence brimming through the team and we fully deserved those three points today.
“The first goal is key in any game but especially in this division and the lads today, from one to eleven, were fantastic and they worked really hard and deserved the win.”
Roberts scored from an assist from Latics debutant Anthony Pilkington, his former Huddersfield Town teammate.
And the forward says Latics have plenty to be excited about from their new signing.
“I have seen him doing that a lot before; he has been putting it through full backs’ legs all of his career,” Roberts added.
“As soon as I knew he was one v one, I knew to leave him and then as soon as he had gone past him I knew he was going to pull it.
“I have got a good relationship with him on and off the pitch and I think he was fantastic today – what a debut.
“He is a top player and when a top player comes through the door training steps up a bit, everyone wants to be that bit better and today the fans loved him from minute one. He works hard as well as his quality.”
